Abstract
This study addressed the ways in which the psychological adaptation(PA) factors of primary caregivers are associated with child social adaptation(SA) and how these relationships may be mediated by primary caregiver-child interactive play activity(IPA) among families in poverty. Data from the Korean Child Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS) were used in this survey of 503 poverty families. The poverty status, psychological adaptation, primary caregiver-child interactive play activity for the primary caregivers, and social adaptation factors for children were administered when the children were 6, 7, and 8 years old. Using structure equation modeling analysis, the results of this study confirmed that child social adaptation while living in poverty was significantly affected by the psychological adaptation of the primary caregivers. In addition, primary caregiver-child interactive play activity acts as a mediator of the linkage between the psychological maladaptation of the primary caregiver and the child social adaptation of the child. Thus, primary caregiver-child interactive play activity acts to buffer the negative effects of the psychological maladaptation of primary caregiver upon the social adaptation among children of families living in poverty
